A Modern Irish Family Christmas
Christmas in Ireland is all about family. Children waking at ungodly hours to see what 'Santy' has brought. Bleary-eyed dad wading through the wrapping paper and setting the table for the first gorging of the day: the Irish breakfast. Mam wrapping the kids up tight for the trip to mass.
We'll gather round the table later, feasting on turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, gravy aplenty. The kids will pull a cracker and screw their faces up as the carrots and brussel sprouts pass them by.
After dinner we'll eye the mountain of dishes nervously, then close the kitchen door and retreat to the fireside. Gran and grandad, aunties and uncles will be round soon to ask the re-energised kids what they got for Christmas. We'll open up a bottle of Baileys and collectively polish off a box of Roses.
We'll exchange presents, grandad reading the labels as he lifts the gifts from under the tree. We're all kids for an hour or so as we shake the parcels and guess before prising apart the wrapping.
If there's a good christmas movie on we'll settle down and have a look while sipping our fifth, sixth and seventh cups of tea. Or maybe we'll have a go at one of the new board games, or a round of charades.
It's bed first for the kids, exhausted after a long day, unwilling to part with their new toys even as sleep descends. Aunties, uncles and grandparents are next to go. They'll be back tomorrow for Stephen's Day leftovers.
And finally mam and dad are alone, tired and tipsy amid the debris of a long christmas day, to celebrate another Christmas together.
